Gallery Systems Ransomware Attack Sparks Concerns for Global Museums
Jan 5: Frontend Garage's Weekly Report
Gallery Systems, a major museum software provider, experienced a ransomware attack, disrupting access to its eMuseum platform used by over 260 active operators and more than 800 clients worldwide. The attack, which occurred on December 28, 2023, led the New York-based company to shut down its IT systems to prevent further encryption.
Museums, including The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Brandywine River Museum of Art, and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, are affected. While the extent of the breach remains unclear, Gallery Systems plans to restore customer data from the last available backup. Some museums lost access to TMS, a program containing sensitive information.
The Museum of Fine Arts Boston assured that non-public data is secure, but the public collections search function on the website is offline with no timeline for restoration.
