OpenAI to Disable ChatGPT Voice Amid Claims It Sounds Like Scarlett Johansson

OpenAI will temporarily disable the "Sky" voice on ChatGPT's mobile apps after claims that it resembles Scarlett Johansson's voice. Scarlett Johansson's husband, Colin Jost, joked on Saturday Night Live that the voice was inspired by her AI character in the film *Her*. OpenAI clarified that Sky’s voice was created by a different professional actress and not Johansson.
OpenAI stated that all five synthetic voices for ChatGPT were made with the help of professional actors, whose identities remain confidential to protect their privacy. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned that the voice features aim to provide a "timeless," "warm," and "natural" listening experience. Despite the controversy, the Sky voice is still available on ChatGPT's iOS app at the time of writing. OpenAI plans to launch a new GPT-4o voice mode in alpha for Plus subscribers in the coming weeks.
